Certification Grade Level Changes
Grade span changes are being phased into the certification system. First grade, fourth grade, and middle grade teachers of language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies need to obtain the certification that is represented in the New Grade Levels.| Certification | Former Grade Levels |

Teachers must also demonstrate content competency as required by No Child Left Behind.
Elementary and secondary teachers who have taught in a middle school setting (departmentalized) for at least three of the last five years may be eligible to grandfather into middle level certification in the specific subject area(s) that he/she taught. This opportunity is available through October 1, 2008, with the following requirements:
- Prior to October 1, 2006, the teacher need only hold a professional certificate at the elementary level or at the secondary level in the subject area for which they are seeking add-on certification.
- Between October 2, 2006, and October 1, 2008, the teacher must also obtain a passing score on the appropriate content area Middle Level or Secondary Level PRAXIS Examination(s) and obtain a passing score on the Middle Level Principles of Learning and Teaching Examination.
- After October 1, 2008, teachers who are seeking to add-on middle school certification must take all required coursework and exams.
Currently, middle school certification is issued but will not be required
until July 1, 2008.
